Writing Sapphire: what to watch for
At 8 letters, Sapphire takes a little more stamina. If your child tires halfway, cover the second half of the row and let them write it in two sittings — finishing well beats finishing fast.
The capital S is a curved letter. Curves are harder than straight lines for small hands, so it's worth practising the S on its own a few times before running the whole name.
Watch the tall letters — h reaches all the way up to the top line, not just to the dashed middle line. Short ascenders are the most common thing to correct at this age.
p hangs below the baseline — the tail drops under the line rather than sitting on it. The dotted rows on this sheet show exactly how far down to go.
Expect the odd flip with p. Reversing b/d and p/q is completely normal well into age six or seven and is not a warning sign — tracing the correct shape repeatedly is exactly how it resolves.
Sapphire has a double pp. Doubles are worth pointing out loud — children often write just one and move on, so count them together as you trace.
